Letter from Principal Ksanznak, Mar. 8

Filed in Hamagrael by on March 8, 2019

Dear Parents,

Our March PTA meeting is scheduled for Thursday the 14th beginning at 7 p.m. in our library.  The PTA provides childcare for the evening so if you have the time, please stop by and join us.

An issue that I struggle with as an educator and parent is trying to find the right balance of the use of technology in our schools and at home.  The Bethlehem Central School District has scheduled a special presentation for parents on Monday, March 18 beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium.  The featured speaker for the program is Tom Kersting, the author of the book “Digitally Distracted – How to Reconnect our Digitally Distracted Kids”. Mr. Kersting will provide training and education on technology use and mental health, how much screen time is too much, strategies to help your child reduce stress and anxiety and creating leaders not followers.  You can find more information about the evening on our district website.

All students in grades 3-8 in New York State take the state assessments in ELA and Mathematics.  The schedule for the assessments are:

English Language Arts – Grade 3-5

  • April 2 & 3
  • Make-up dates are April 4-9

Mathematics – Grades 3-5

  • May 1 & 2
  • Make-up dates May 3-9

We use the results of the assessments to identify areas of strength in our program and areas in which we can improve.  In 2018 the tests were reduced from three to two days. The number of questions have also been reduced lessening test fatigue and better enabling our students to demonstrate what they know and are able to do.  You can find more information about the assessments on our district website.

Our Spring After School Enrichment officially begins on Monday, March 11.  We have one enrichment class that started today as we have a Superintendent’s Conference Day on Friday, March 22 which will be a day off for students.

The Bethlehem Central United Employees Association (BCUEA) is collecting for our area animal shelter and rescue organizations.  They have a collection box set up in our front hallway from March 11-21. They are looking to collect the following items: dog and cat food, toys new and used, treats, leashes, food dishes, paper towels and cloth towels.

Our Hamagrael PTA is collecting gently used books for The Red Bookshelf.  The collection will take place from March 11-15 and they are accepting all books but in particular need leveled readers.

Have a wonderful weekend and we set the clocks ahead one hour this weekend.  Hopefully it will bring warmer weather!
