Every year, the Capital Region chapter of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) awards the title of “Educator of the Year” to a local educator who has made a significant impact on the lives of LGBTQ students. This year, Bethlehem Central Middle School counselor Chynna Marcucci received this prestigious award and honor at the GLSEN NYCR Gala – Educator, Student and Ally Awards held June 13 in Albany.

“Ms. Marcucci has made great efforts to be a supportive ally and mentor to our middle school students that identify as or are questioning if they are LGBTQ,” said Kristen Connor, the district’s K-12 counseling supervisor. “For some time, our students have been asking for a safe space to connect and share in a place where they can be their authentic selves. With the support of faculty, staff, students and parents, Ms. Marcucci found the right people to listen at the right time.

“Our middle school’s Pride Coalition is now into its second year and it is going strong,” said Connor.

Marcucci was recommended for the award by Connor and other colleagues including teacher Mike Mitchell and BCMS principal Mike Klugman. Mr. Mitchell is the faculty advisor to the Genders and Sexualities Alliance (GSA) at the high school.

“The award for Ms. Marcucci’s work was inspired by the students and families of the district,” said Connor. “Ms. Marcucci is most deserving of this award.”

GLSEN ensures that every student, in every school, is valued and treated with respect, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. They believe that all students deserve a safe and affirming school environment where they can learn and grow. For more information, please visit www.glsen.org
