Congratulations to seniors Srinidhi Chari, Riley Grossman, Andrew Taylor and Devin Bidstrup, the Bethlehem Central School District team that finished third in this year’s New York State Econ Challenge, held last month in New York City. The group was the only upstate team to earn an invitation in the most competitive bracket of the quiz competition designed to test students on economics knowledge and literacy.

The group traveled by train with their AP Economics teacher Jason Majewski to the state competition, which was held April 15 at Hunter College in Manhattan. The Advanced Placement students competed in the upper division of the Econ Challenge known as the Adam Smith Division. The students each had to complete a series of three multiple-choice tests where they answered questions on microeconomics, macroeconomics and international trade and current events.

“Only five teams statewide were invited to participate in the 2018 New York State Econ Challenge,” said Mr. Majewski. “It is an honor for these students and for Bethlehem to be able to represent the region and compete against top schools from the New York City metropolitan region.”

According to Riley Grossman, participating in the Econ Challenge was not only a way to bond with his teammates, the competition helped him prepare for AP exams taking place this week at the high school.

“I found that the Econ Challenge is a great way to review for AP Micro and Macro,” said Grossman, who plans to attend SUNY Geneseo in the fall.

For Srinidhi Chari, who plans to study mechanical engineering at Brown University, being fluent in economics helps students no matter what their path might be.

“Economics is interdisciplinary,” said Chari. “It is woven into all subject matter and influences your decision making throughout your life.”

Congratulations to Srinidhi, Riley, Andrew and Devin. Making BC proud!
