Reopening update: Families can choose remote instruction

Filed in Archive, District, District News by on August 5, 2020

An important message to families from Superintendent Jody Monroe.

Dear BC Family:

We are refining our plans for the 2020-21 school year and we need your assistance!

Last week, we submitted our plans to reopen schools in the Bethlehem Central School District for the 2020-21 school year. While no decision on reopening has been announced yet by Governor Cuomo, the district is currently planning to reopen using a hybrid model of in-person instruction and remote learning. In-person instruction would be prioritized for our youngest learners and for those who need additional attention. Remote learning would be combined with in-person instruction for students in grades 7 through 12 in an alternating, every-other-day schedule.

As part of the BCSD Hybrid Reopening Model, students would receive:

Full-day in-person instruction, Monday through Friday

  • Grades K-6
  • English as a New Language (ENL) students
  • Special education Intensive Skills and Skills classes
  • CTE students (if possible)

Alternating in-person instruction and remote learning, Monday through Friday

  • Grades 7-12
    • “A” day: In-person for last names A-K; all others remote
    • “B” day: In-person for last names L-Z; all others remote

Important schedule update

The plan has been updated to include a phased re-entry for students that begins Wednesday, Sept. 9 through Tuesday, Sept. 15. There will be no school for students on Tuesday, Sept. 8 as had originally been planned. This day will be used as an additional staff development day. Please remember all plans at this point are tentative and subject to change.

Family choice – BCSD Remote Learning Waiver

For families with health or safety concerns or whose students may not feel comfortable returning to the classroom this fall, full remote learning from home is an option for all families in the district. Families who want to request the fall remote learning option for their child must complete the BCSD Remote Learning Waiver form by August 15, 2020. This form is an important part of our planning for the new school year. The BCSD Remote Learning Waiver Form SURVEY can be found here.

When making this decision, please note the following regarding remote learning at each level. The structure of the remote learning is subject to change, but for purposes of filling out the waiver, remote learning at each level includes:

K-5 Remote Learning Family Choice Option

  • Students will receive a mix of video conferencing lessons provided by BCSD faculty via Google Meet or Zoom and independent learning opportunities supported by online tools.

Grade 6 Remote Learning Family Choice Option

  • Students will follow an assigned schedule and will receive live instruction in each of the core subject areas. Students will receive all non-core instruction through pre-recorded videos and assigned tasks.

7-12 Remote Learning Family Choice Option

  • Students will follow an assigned schedule and receive live instruction in all subjects except physical education. Students may receive physical education instruction through pre-recorded videos and assigned tasks (dependent upon in-person class activity).

The Remote Learning Family Choice was discussed as part of the K-12 Parent Q & A Sessions held earlier this week. The Parent Q & A sessions can be viewed on YouTube. The presentation from these online meetings can be viewed below. There will also be a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document that will be shared on Friday, August 7 that includes answers to questions from these forums as well as questions that have been received via email. To submit a question regarding the Remote Learning Family Choice, please email districtoffice@bethlehemschools.org.

Ensuring that families who want their child(ren) to enroll in remote learning to start the year are counted as part of this survey is vitally important. Students who enroll in remote learning will need to commit to staying in remote learning until at least the end of the first quarter, November 13, 2020.

The BCSD Remote Learning Waiver Form survey must be completed by 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 15.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support of the school district.

Sincerely,

Jody Monroe

Superintendent
