The Bethlehem Central School District community is mourning the passing of longtime track and field coach James “Jim” Connolly.

Connolly, who retired from teaching in the Scotia-Glenville Central School District, had been a coach of the outdoor track and field teams at Bethlehem for 12 years. He was was a field coach working alongside BC school counselor and track and field head coach Darnell Douglas.

Mr. Douglas said Coach Connolly had been an inspiration to students and coaches alike, at Bethlehem and elsewhere.

“He has mentored countless athletes and taught them to utilize athletics to pursue higher education,” said Douglas. “Jim Connolly’s passion and dedication to coaching bear no equal.”

When BC Athletic Director Len Kies shared the news of Coach Connolly’s passing on Twitter, he noted that “Jim was fast with a smile and a story.”

Douglas said a better description of his coaching colleague and friend might have been that he was fast with a smile but slow with a story.

“Anyone who has met Jim knows that he does not know what brevity means, and a two-minute conversation could easily turn into 20 minutes,” said Coach Douglas. “And that was a gift. With his wealth of knowledge and funny stories, he brought life and enjoyment every day to practice.”

Services for Coach Connolly will be held Saturday, Oct. 3. The obituary for James “Jim” Connolly can be found here.
