Slingerlands unveils One School, One Book

On Friday, January 27, Slingerlands Elementary School unveiled this year’s choice for its One School, One Book program in which the entire school community will read the same book. This year, it will be Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin. The book, set in the in the fictional Chinese village of Fruitless Mountain, centers on a young girl named Minli who lives in a ramshackle hut with her parents. In the evenings, her father regales her with old folktales of the Jade Dragon and the Old Man on the Moon, who knows the answers to all of life’s questions. After hearing tales of the Old Man of the Moon, who knows the future and has the power to change fortunes, Minli sets out on a quest to find him and change her family’s fortune.

Each student in grades K-5 was given a packet that included the chapter book, an important bookmark and some special keepsakes to commemorate the kick off of One School, One Book. The students will spend several weeks reading the book at home with their families. Author Grace Lin will be visiting the school in the spring to discuss the story with students.
