Update May 28: Looking ahead to 2020-21

A message from Superintendent Jody Monroe:

Dear BC Family:

Last week, Governor Cuomo announced that summer school would be held remotely this year. While our high school does not provide summer school, this decision does impact our special education department’s summer program known as ESY and our ELF program for K-2 learners needing additional academic support.

The governor also indicated he will not make a decision on a fall reopening for NYS schools until July or August, but said districts should plan for that reopening to happen. As I have mentioned, our administrative team began this planning process several weeks ago. We are using guidance currently available from both the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the New York State Department of Health (DOH) to put preliminary plans in place for the 2020-21 school year.

Our planning is designed to keep the safety of students and staff as our number one priority. With so many unknowns our wisest course of action is to ready our buildings and classrooms for the social distancing of students.

We have limited staff returning to our buildings next week to begin this work. We will be asking both faculty and staff to help us by clearing classrooms so our team can calculate capacity in classrooms for seating students six feet apart should that be a requirement of any reopening plan. Tackling this work now may make our buildings and classrooms look a little different but it will also position us for a successful transition to a new school year.

Please keep in mind that how and when schools reopen will ultimately be made by executive order of the governor with guidance from state and local health officials. As we look ahead, our reopening team wants to hear from you to help guide some of its planning. Your ideas, concerns, and questions are very important to us, in the same way your children are very important to us.

In a normal year, the end of May is when we celebrate our retiring faculty members and staff with a reception that includes family, friends and coworkers. We are unable to do that this year but wanted to share with you the joy and gratitude we feel toward each of them. Together, they have dedicated more than 500 years of service to generations of Bethlehem students. The slideshow that would have accompanied that ceremony can be viewed here. Please join us in wishing them the very best.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support and your input.
