Bethlehem Central High School senior Paisley Sims was honored earlier this month with a Paul and Suzanne Murray Martin Luther King, Jr. Courage Award.

The award is presented annually by Siena University to three young people from the Capital Region who have demonstrated personal courage by taking positive action against racism, prejudice or bias-related violence in their communities. Sims accepted the award, which included a $500 cash prize, at a banquet on Tuesday, February 10.

Sims was nominated for the award by BCHS school counselor Kate Burkart.

“Paisley exemplifies what it means to lead with courage, compassion, and authenticity,” said Burkart. “Through her work as a student leader, her willingness to speak out against injustice, and her commitment to repairing relationships and building bridges, she has made an extraordinary impact on her peers and our school community.”

Burkart said Sims takes the initiative to connect with students who might otherwise go unnoticed.

“She has personally reached out to new and underrepresented students, helping them make friends, and ensuring they feel seen and accepted,” said Burkart. “Whether inviting a new freshman to sit with her at lunch or encouraging a transfer student to get involved, Paisley’s kindness and inclusivity ripple through the student body.”

Sims serves as president of ALANA (African, Latinx, Asian, Native American & Allies) and is a trained NCBI (National Coalition Building Institute) facilitator. As an NCBI facilitator, Sims is one of several BCHS and BCMS students who have learned to mediate peer conflicts and guide their classmates through difficult conversations about bias and identity.

In nominating Sims, Burkart said that the high school senior has shown tremendous bravery by sharing her personal experiences with discrimination to educate others. Sims has been selected as a featured speaker at three major events, including faculty and staff presentations.

“Her voice has resonated deeply with both students and adults, promoting empathy and driving important conversations about respect and understanding,” said Burkart.

Congratulations to Paisley Sims, Courage Award winner!
