Slingerlands Elementary School students recently raised a record-setting total of $20,473 for Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Capital Region, the largest amount any school has raised in the program’s 12-year history!

Slingerlands students participated in the READ for Ronald McDonald House campaign, a literacy-based fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Capital Region. Slingerlands Library Media Specialist Amanda Ingalls organized the effort and encouraged strong student participation throughout the campaign. They logged more than 39,000 minutes of reading over five weeks in support of Ronald McDonald House programs, which provide housing, meals, and other services to families with children facing serious medical issues.

Students were thrilled to cash in on an agreement they made with Principal Baker: as part of a pledge tied to the students meeting their goals, Principal Baker bravely dyed his hair green for the event and (even more) bravely ate a meal of green eggs and ham. The top 24 readers and fundraisers also took the stage to read “Green Eggs and Ham” aloud to their classmates.

The afternoon was filled with laughter, pride, and excitement. Principal Baker closed the assembly with a surprise guitar performance and sing-along to John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads”. It was the perfect spring recess send-off!

Congratulations and great job, Slingerlands!
