District mourns passing of BCHS student Gianna Ida-Smith

Dear BC staff and families:

It is with deep sorrow that I write to inform you that a BC student, Gianna Ida-Smith, who would have been a sophomore at Bethlehem Central High School in the fall, passed away this morning, July 7, 2026. Gianna had been undergoing treatment for cancer since earlier this year.

Gianna had been a Bethlehem student since kindergarten, attending Elsmere Elementary School and Bethlehem Central Middle School before entering high school. Gianna was a member of the band and was especially passionate about basketball. She had served as team manager for the girls’ varsity basketball team during the 2025-26 season, when an injury and then illness kept her from playing the game she loved. Her optimism and determination to remain part of the team were inspiring to the entire BC community.

The district extends its deepest condolences to the Ida-Smith family. Grief counselors will be available for any students and staff throughout the week, beginning at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, July 8. Counselors will be located in the BCHS Counseling Center, located in the central foyer of the school.

District administrators are in contact with the Ida-Smith family. Any additional details regarding services will be provided as they become available, with the permission of the family.

Sincerely,

Jody Monroe

Superintendent
