Bethlehem Central School District has named longtime Bethlehem Central High School Assistant Principal Heather Culnan interim principal of Hamagrael Elementary School.
Culnan will begin her new role Aug. 31, following the departure of Hamagrael Principal Ian Knox, who is taking a one-year leave of absence to pursue a professional opportunity outside the district.
Culnan brings more than 25 years of experience in education, including 14 years as an administrator in Bethlehem Central. She joined the district in 2012 as an assistant principal at Bethlehem Central High School, a position she has held throughout her tenure. Before joining Bethlehem Central, she served as a school administrator at Schuylerville Jr.-Sr. High School.
Culnan began her career as an elementary school teacher, teaching third and fourth grades in the South Colonie Central School District. She holds a bachelor’s degree in education from SUNY Oneonta, a master’s degree in literacy from the University at Albany and a certificate of advanced studies in educational administration and policy studies from UAlbany.
For Culnan, the opportunity to return to the elementary level is a chance to reconnect with the type of school environment that first inspired her career in education.
“I am looking forward to building new relationships with the students, staff and families at Hamagrael Elementary,” Culnan said. “I’m especially excited to return to my elementary roots and be part of the school environment that first inspired my love of learning and education.”
Culnan said one of her priorities will be supporting the strong work already underway at Hamagrael while welcoming students and families who will join the school community this fall as a result of the district’s elementary attendance zone changes.
“My goal as interim leader will be to support and contribute to the wonderful work already happening at Hamagrael, thanks to a talented and dedicated faculty and staff who have made this community so special,” Culnan said. “With new students arriving from Glenmont, Eagle and Elsmere, there will be many new faces in the building this fall. I want those students and their families to know that they are joining a community that is ready to welcome them. We will get to know one another, build new relationships and make this transition together.”
Superintendent Jody Monroe said Culnan is a strong fit for the interim role.
“Heather Culnan knows Bethlehem, she knows leadership and she knows how to engage elementary students,” Monroe said. “I am confident that, together with faculty and staff, Ms. Culnan will provide a strong foundation for a successful 2026-27 school year.”
As she transitions to Hamagrael, Culnan said she plans to prioritize collaboration, accessibility and strong relationships with students, families and staff.
“I believe strong school leadership starts with being visible, accessible and genuinely invested in the people who make up a school community,” Culnan said. “I look forward to getting to know everyone, listening and learning about what makes Hamagrael special, and working together to make sure every student feels welcomed, valued and supported.”
