Related services are supports that help students with disabilities benefit from their special education programs and access the general education curriculum. These services address developmental, physical, communication, social-emotional, and health-related needs that may affect a student’s ability to learn and participate fully in school.
Related services may include, but are not limited to, speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, counseling, psychological services, school health and nursing services, assistive technology, orientation and mobility services, audiology and interpreting services, school social work, parent counseling and training, and other appropriate developmental or supportive services. Services are provided only when required to support educational access and progress.
How Related Service Decisions Are Made
Decisions are made by the Committee on Special Education (CSE) based on a comprehensive review of each student’s individual strengths, needs, and priorities. This includes evaluation results, classroom performance, progress over time, functional and social-emotional needs, input from teachers and service providers, and family perspective.
The type, frequency, and duration of related services are determined by what is necessary to support the student’s access to instruction and progress toward individualized goals. Services may be adjusted over time as student needs change, ensuring that supports remain responsive, individualized, and educationally relevant.
The CSE uses established guidelines when making decisions about related services. These guidelines are linked below:
