Tomorrow: Celebrate Earth Day in BC Cafeterias

Image of Earth character that reads Happy earth day love our planet - with Bethlehem Central "BC" brandingOn Tuesday, April 22, BC cafeterias will celebrate Earth Day with a special 100% plant-based chicken entrée from Rebellyous Foods.

The BCSD Food Service Department is dedicated to reducing food waste, conserving resources, and promoting earth-friendly practices in its daily operations. BC Food Service Director Claire Groudine works closely with the district’s Sustainability Coordinator and Green Team leader, Mark Warford, to reduce environmental impact through a variety of green initiatives:

School Gardens: Many of BC’s schools have on-site gardens, where student members of the Green Team take an active role in planting, caring for, and harvesting produce. The produce is used as fresh ingredients in meals prepared in school cafeterias.

Local Sourcing: BC Food Services prioritizes sourcing ingredients from local farms and suppliers whenever possible, supporting the community and reducing the environmental impact of long-distance transportation.

Recycling Education: As part of the Green Team’s “The Waste We Create” initiative, all students are taught how to sort and recycle their waste properly in all BC cafeterias.

Composting: Every school kitchen composts food scraps to reduce waste.

Alongside everyday efforts to reduce waste and support local food suppliers, featuring plant-based options is one way BC cafeterias are exploring more sustainable choices in school meals.
