BCMS students turn mathematical theorem into catchy earworm

When you can’t quite remember that mathematical formula or theorem, what do you do? If you are the talented students in Michelle VanSteele’s Honors Geometry class at Bethlehem Middle School, you might try attaching that info to a catchy song and rewriting the lyrics so they stick in your head.

An impromptu songwriting and singing group now known as Lilly, Zoey and the Triangles took the backbeat from Bruno Mars’ hit song APT and gave it a new sound: the sound of congruent triangles.

The students’ song is an ode to CPCTC, an acronym that stands for Corresponding Parts of Congruent Triangles are Congruent. It’s a fundamental principle in geometry used in triangle proofs. The group put the song together just before this year’s Geometry Regents exam.

Group members are eighth graders Aubrey Deeb, Ella Cady, Zoey Larman, Lilly Strach, Stella Nichols, and Lucy Knuth.
