Special book displays have been appearing throughout April in BC’s school libraries, helping students see, understand, and appreciate one another while celebrating Neurodiversity and Autism Awareness Month.
Library media specialists in each school have created library displays with books intended to spark conversation and help students of all ages better understand neurodiversity and autism. The “book nooks” include an age-appropriate mix of fiction and nonfiction titles, biographies, and picture books.
The library faculty curated a selection of books from autistic authors and other stories informed by individual perspectives and experiences with neurodiversity and autism. They highlight themes such as friendship, communication, sensory experiences, and the strengths and challenges that come with being neurodivergent.
>Members of the Special Education PTA (SEPTA) donated two books per school to help each school grow its collection of neurodiversity-affirming books. SEPTA has also worked to expand these book displays and suggested reading throughout the community, with the help of the Bethlehem Public Library and Delmar bookstore, I Love Books.
Thank you to our Library Media Specialists and to SEPTA for helping our students deepen their awareness, respect and understanding of one another as individuals.
