BC students are helping strengthen school culture across grade levels through peer-led training focused on kindness and inclusion.

BCMS eighth-grade Kindness Leaders, supported by Student Assistance Counselor Cyrilla Peluso, LMSW; Coordinator of Inclusive Practices and School Climate, Allan Gadsden; and BCMS Principal, Dr. Michael Klugman, recently visited Hamagrael Elementary School fifth-grade students to share a peer-led lesson they designed to help prepare the younger students for the transition to middle school.

The lesson centered on the idea of “I control me,” emphasizing that while students cannot control what others say or do, they can always control how they respond.

The Kindness Leaders encouraged the fifth graders to think about what kindness looks like in everyday life, posing questions such as, “What is true kindness anyway?” “Is it hard to be cool and kind at the same time?” and “How can you bring kindness to others in middle school?” The fifth graders were asked to write down personal and kindness-focused goals beginning with the phrase, “I can control me by…” They discussed how to carry those goals into middle school and explored ways students can support themselves, as well as where to look for support when they need it.

The eighth graders offered reassurance and thoughtful answers, helping ease concerns while highlighting the exciting opportunities and greater independence ahead.

The BCMS eighth-grade Kindness Leaders concluded their presentation with seven points of advice for the soon-to-be middle school students:

  1. People change and so do friendships – some come & go, both are normal!
  2. Don’t say stuff just to be cool.
  3. Be a leader, not a follower.
  4. One mistake will never define you.
  5. Learn from your mistakes.
  6. Don’t be afraid to speak up.
  7. Be aware of your influence.

Thank you to the BCMS Kindness Leaders for sharing your knowledge and for your commitment to promoting a kind and inclusive school community!
