For the love of jazz at Slingerlands

On Friday, May 16, students at Slingerlands Elementary enjoyed listening to live jazz music featuring BCHS alumnus Dan Jantson (Class of 2022) and a group of musicians from the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford.

The group, known as The Cribtet, is a six-piece band with its roots in hard bop jazz with a focus on the original music composed by the band members.

Slingerlands teacher Amy Roos, who coordinated the special event, said the goal of the band’s visit was to have the musicians share their love of jazz with elementary school students.

“Watching the group perform is meant to encourage students to stick with music and possibly inspire some to join the jazz ensemble once they get to middle school,” said Roos. “By just looking around the room at all of the smiling faces, we can confidently say that there are many new jazz fans at Slingerlands!”

Formed in 2024, the band includes Patrick Gordon (Bass), Dan Jantson (Drums), Parker Lewis (Trombone), Ben Malynoski (Tenor Saxophone), Aidan Slate (Piano), and Gavin Tarling (Alto Saxophone). Band members originally met through studying music together at the Hartt School’s Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz. They settled on their name, The Cribtet, when several members moved into an apartment they nicknamed The Crib, and began playing original music together.

Thank you to The Cribtet for a great show at Slingerlands!
