At the June 3 Board of Education meeting, school district officials will propose a capital construction timeline resulting from this year’s approval of a $60 million facilities improvement project. The timeline includes plans for the temporary relocation of Elsmere students and staff for part of the 2027-28 school year.
The Board meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 3 at 7 p.m. in Room D-122 at the high school. A copy of the planned presentation to the Board can be viewed here.
Construction projects in several locations across the district are scheduled to begin in the spring and summer of 2027. Elementary classroom renovations, which account for more than a third of the project, would begin at Elsmere in July 2027. Most other elementary classroom renovations would not begin until 2028 or 2029.
Due to the extensive renovations and required removal of asbestos-containing materials at the nearly 100-year-old Elsmere Elementary School, the district plans to temporarily close the school to students and staff for six months, from July 2027 through December 2027. This would allow high-impact work to be completed in a compressed timeframe. Elsmere would reopen in January 2028.
Preliminary plans would move Elsmere staff and students for the start of the 2027-28 school year as follows:
- Elsmere Kindergarten and the Connections program (Sept. 2027-Dec. 2027): Students and staff would stay together as Elsmere cohorts and move to either Eagle Elementary School or Slingerlands Elementary. The Elsmere classes would be located within one of the buildings, but would maintain separate classrooms.
- Elsmere Grades 1-5 (Sept. 2027-Dec. 2027): Students and staff would stay together as Elsmere cohorts and move to a dedicated first-floor wing of the middle school. The Elsmere wing of the middle school would include a separate entrance, separate restrooms and office space. There would be minimal impact to the middle school from the temporary relocation due to lower enrollment at the school.
- Elsmere staff who work in the summer would be relocated from July 2027 through December 2027.
“Elsmere needs the most work of any of the schools. The accelerated construction and relocation plan may have a significant short-term impact for fall 2027, but it is intended to reduce what would be prolonged disruptions over three years. With this plan, all renovations at Elsmere will be completed by January 2028,” said Superintendent Jody Monroe. “We are fortunate to have available swing space to accommodate the moves, minimize disruption, and maximize safety and efficiency.”
Monroe said moving Elsmere kindergarten students and the Connections program to one of the elementary schools rather than the middle school is necessary to accommodate bathroom and mobility requirements.
“We will work closely with all stakeholders to ease these transitions for 2027-28,” said Superintendent Monroe. “We have a full year to plan for the temporary Elsmere moves and to ensure all students and staff are prepared and ready.”
In 2028 and 2029, some students and staff at Hamagrael and Glenmont may need to be relocated to other buildings to accommodate extensive classroom renovations at those schools (see construction timeline below).
