BC named Aspen’s District of the Year
On Wednesday, April 8, 2015, a team from BC accepted the 2015 Aspen District of the Year Award at the annual Aspen Institute held in Providence, RI. The district was awarded this honor based on its implementation of BC’s new student information system, including the design of the implementation, their best practices for training and communication, and how their work could benefit other districts.
Bethlehem’s Aspen implementation team used many innovative elements, including (but not limited to) the use of a cohort of Turn-Key Teacher Trainers called T3s to help with district-wide staff training and a website dedicated to communicating numerous aspects of the implementation, such as registration for professional development sessions and a schedule of events.
The award also recognized the implementation team’s ability to engage stakeholders in the vision of Aspen’s use in the district, a vision that includes creating a culture of quality information management, and providing the data and tools that teachers need to inform their instruction. Congratulations to the Aspen implementation team, all of the Turn-Key Trainers, administrators, anyone who was involved in the planning and implementation of Aspen at BC, and to the teachers!
The district’s Technology Department has hosted two Aspen parent information sessions where technology staff and parent volunteers provided hands-on assistance and answered questions about Aspen!

What is Aspen?
Aspen is a student information system which offers parents and students online access to a secure site with personalized information about a student’s academic program and progress. The password protected parent portal will help to make communication among students, parents, teachers, and administrators more efficient. Student report cards and bus schedules are posted here, as well as interim reports and academic schedules.
If you don’t know your Login ID and/or password, email firstname.lastname@example.org. You will be asked to provide information to confirm your identity such as your address and the name(s), grade(s) and school(s) of your children. NOTE: Every parent and guardian with portal access will have their own Login ID. If you have more than one student in the Bethlehem Central School District, you will only need one Aspen account and login to access the information for each of your children.
Parents and guardians will be able to access basic student information such as emergency contact information year round. However after a school year ends, the new school year’s information only becomes available on the dates noted below:
- Bus route information: August 1
- Student schedules: August 25
- Academics and calendar information: September 9
- Interim Progress Reports and Quarterly Report Cards: please see Important Dates on the Academics Page for Publish dates
Aspen also provides teachers the ability to share additional course information such as study guides, class documents, assignments, homework, scheduled assessments and class updates. Teachers have been engaged in Aspen training and are at different stages in learning how to use the system. As a result of this variation, individual teachers may provide more information than others. Parents will likely see more class-specific information added throughout the school year as teachers become more familiar and gain experience with Aspen.
To log in to the Aspen Parent Portal: 1. Open your browser to connect to the Internet. Visit http://aspen.bethlehemcentral.org 2. Enter your Login ID and Password. 3. To enable self-serve password recovery, please provide the information requested on this screen. 4. The first time you log on, you will be prompted to change your password. Your home page will then appear. This will bring you to your Family’s home screen. 5. Click on the Family top tab to access your student’s information. 6. Click on the “Documents” side tab to access Bus Routes and other information. 7. Click on the “Schedule” side tab to access your student’s schedule.
What information will be available on August 1?
Parents are able to review emergency contact information year round, however, other information remains unavailable until specific dates after the system rollover for the new school year in mid-July:

What about schedule information for the 2015-16 school year?
See item # 7 above. Schedule information for all district students will be posted to Aspen on August 25, 2015. Additional academics and calendar information will be posted on September 9, 2015.
Will additional information be available through the Aspen parent portal during the school year?
Yes. All interim progress reports and report cards will be published to Aspen (see schedule on Academics – Important Dates (http://www.bethlehemschools.org/academics/dates/ ). In addition, as teachers become more familiar with Aspen, many will be posting assignments and grades that are classroom-specific. Teachers have been engaged in Aspen training and are at different levels in learning how to incorporate this portal into their practice. As a result of this variation, individual teachers may provide more information than others.
Is my child’s information secure?
Aspen protects student data with the same advanced technology your bank uses to protect your financial accounts. Rest assured that Aspen users only have access to information they need, and nothing more. We have carefully configured the system to ensure your child’s information is confidential and can only be retrieved by you – the parent/guardian – and authorized school personnel.
What if I forget my password?
If you forget your password, please click on the blue “I forgot my Password” link provided on the logon page. A password reset dialog box will appear. Enter your Login ID and Primary Email address in the boxes provided and then click Continue. The Password Reset dialog box expands to include the security question you chose when setting up password recovery. Enter your response to the security question in the box provided, then click Submit. If the security answer you enter is correct, Aspen will send an email message to the primary email address for the account. The email contains your password. Note: Login ID (lowercase), passwords, email addresses and security answers are case sensitive.
